{"id":3748,"date":"2022-08-22T15:26:10","date_gmt":"2022-08-22T18:26:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/pratica\/educacao-stem-biodigestor-transformacao-alimentos-biogas\/"},"modified":"2023-02-02T13:54:23","modified_gmt":"2023-02-02T16:54:23","slug":"education-stem-biodigester-transformation-food-biogas","status":"publish","type":"pratica","link":"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/case\/education-stem-biodigester-transformation-food-biogas\/","title":{"rendered":"Youth club and a Biodigester at school: teaching in support of the role of young scientists"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\u201cYou have to believe that it is possible.\u201d This is the mantra that B\u00e1rbara Rodrigues, a chemistry teacher at <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/site\/eeeisebastiaodeoliveirarocha\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Escola Estadual Professor Sebasti\u00e3o de Oliveira Rocha<\/a>, in S\u00e3o Carlos (SP), repeats to herself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cYou have to believe that it is possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>She believes that the transformation of education lies in encouraging students to <a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/entry\/critical-thinking-project-based-learning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">think critically<\/a> and have the space and conditions to build their own responses to <a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/connected-education\/real-problem-solving\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">local problems<\/a>. \u201cThe <a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/entry\/scientific-literacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">science curriculum<\/a> needs to be lived in practice, answering questions they identify in everyday life,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1008\" height=\"533\" src=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/solve-for-tomorrow-projeto-ciencias-biodigestor.png\" alt=\"Biodigestor prototipado por jovens transforma sobras de alimentos em biog\u00e1s.\" class=\"wp-image-592\" srcset=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/solve-for-tomorrow-projeto-ciencias-biodigestor.png 1008w, https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/solve-for-tomorrow-projeto-ciencias-biodigestor-300x159.png 300w, https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/solve-for-tomorrow-projeto-ciencias-biodigestor-768x406.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1008px) 100vw, 1008px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mediating<\/strong> a Youth Science Club called <a href=\"https:\/\/diversa.org.br\/relatos-de-experiencia\/jovens-realizam-acoes-para-reaproveitamento-de-residuos-organicos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tecnologia Escolar Sustent\u00e1vel Ligada ao Ardu\u00edno (Sustainable School Technology Connected to the Arduino \u2013 TESLA)<\/a>, and with the support of the biology teacher Isabel Cristina Santana Kakuda, B\u00e1rbara encouraged a group of ten students to build an anaerobic digester at school. Inspired by another school project, which calculated the waste in school lunches, the young people and the teacher decided to advance the discussion about food leftovers and its effects on the environment. Even having managed to significantly reduce the rates of food disposal, there were still leftovers that could be reused and transformed. \u201cTogether, we studied several alternatives for reuse and arrived at the proposal to build a biodigester\u201d, explains B\u00e1rbara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"explaining\">\n    <div class=\"explaining__text\">\n        <p>For the construction of the equipment, it was necessary to study concepts of chemistry and biology linked to the decomposition of organic matter and to research conceptual and technical paths to respond to the identified demand. For this purpose the teacher presented a set of academic and didactic references to the class, inviting them to draw their hypotheses. In a dynamic that included meeting moments, individual and collective study of the class, B\u00e1rbara drew up a research and experimentation plan with the young people until arriving at the construction of the <a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/entry\/prototype-stem-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prototype<\/a>.<\/p>\n    <\/div>\n    <aside class=\"explaining__box -yellow \">\n        <h5>\n                        Explaining!        <\/h5>\n                Youth clubs are a pedagogical strategy of the Full-Time Teaching Program of S\u00e3o Paulo State Department of Education, in Brazil. Students enrolled in extended journeys have access&#8230;        <a href=\"#\" class=\"buttontext -li -white\" role=\"button\" data-bs-toggle=\"modal\" data-bs-target=\"#modalBoxLateral\" data-color=\"yellow\" data-title=\"Explaining!\" data-content=\"&lt;p&gt;Youth clubs are a pedagogical strategy of the Full-Time Teaching Program of S\u00e3o Paulo State Department of Education, in Brazil. Students enrolled in extended journeys have access to other curricular dynamics, including moments for building and monitoring a Life Project.&lt;\/p&gt;\n&lt;p&gt;In clubs, young people meet in thematic interest groups and, together with the board of directors, choose and invite a teacher to accompany their activities. With a fixed workload for the development of activities, clubs must organize a plan of what they want and how they want to build or access a certain knowledge, sharing the results achieved with the school community at the end of the semester or school year.&lt;\/p&gt;\n\">\n            See more \n            <svg width=\"20\" height=\"20\" viewBox=\"0 0 20 20\" fill=\"none\" xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\"><path d=\"M10 4.1665V15.8332\" stroke=\"white\" stroke-width=\"1.5\" stroke-linecap=\"square\" stroke-linejoin=\"round\"\/><path d=\"M4.1665 10H15.8332\" stroke=\"white\" stroke-width=\"1.5\" stroke-linecap=\"square\" stroke-linejoin=\"round\"\/><\/svg>\n        <\/a>\n            <\/aside>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Collaborative work: the importance of listening and respect in the collective construction of projects<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, the meetings were initially online but based on the student&#8217;s needs, they were able to use the school\u2019s laboratory for research and empirical tests. \u201cThese meeting moments were fundamental not only for the development of the project but also for strengthening our unity as a group\u201d, emphasizing the importance of building affective bonds in the teaching and learning process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"explaining\">\n    <div class=\"explaining__text\">\n        <p>The construction of the prototype required a lot of <a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/entry\/creativity-project-based-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">creativity<\/a> from those involved and constant <a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/connected-education\/real-problem-solving\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">problem-solving<\/a>. According to the teacher, replicating something with easily accessible materials at school is not trivial: it was necessary to study and test several alternatives to make the equipment work \u2014 from the position where the container [gallon] should be, to the correct sealing of the construction seams. \u201cMany times we almost gave up, but the bond we had and the shared desire we shared to achieve what we wanted, made us reach the result\u201d, she identifies.<\/p>\n    <\/div>\n    <aside class=\"explaining__box -blue -full\">\n        <h5>\n                        Learn more        <\/h5>\n                <p>Access the teacher\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/project\/education-stem-biodigester-transformation-food-biogas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> in the Project Gallery.<\/p>\n            <\/aside>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, according to the teacher, the diversity of the group is fundamental and requires the teacher\u2019s attention to the <a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/connected-education\/soft-skills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">socio-emotional skills<\/a> of young people, understanding that collaboration between different profiles is necessary for the accomplishment of the work. For her a successful team brings together and stimulates each student profile (the dreamer, the systematizer, the resilient, the maker, etc.) in a process in which everyone has a role and learns to work together, in collaboration. \u201cIn the same way, my work with my teaching partner was fundamental. We have different and complementary profiles. I am very anxious; I need to solve everything on time. And Isabel organizes, establishes the steps to get where we want\u201d, she justifies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"banner -yellow\">\n    <h5>\n                Eureka moment!    <\/h5>\n    <p>\u201cWe were having a hard time measuring the gas production in the project, then I pictured my pilates ball and started to smile with joy. I ran to my colleague, Isabel and, afterward, we went to meet the class. We celebrated together! The idea could work. The next day, my pilates ball was installed in the biodigester, and in a few days, it was full. Yes!
