The world of work and society demand from young people a set of skills that are not experienced in the traditional classroom.\u201d With this perception, Teacher Rogers M\u00e9ndez rethought the structure of his programming classes for the 3rd technical medium year at the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/juanterrier.cl\/nosotros\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Instituto Polit\u00e9cnico Bicentenario Juan Terrier Dailly<\/a><\/em>, in the province of Curic\u00f3, in Maule, central Chile. The result: several innovative projects, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/agrodetect0.webnode.cl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Agro-Detect<\/a> solution, which allows remote monitoring of air toxicity in agriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When provoked about which questions they wanted to investigate, the groups strongly brought up aspects of the school routine and the territory where they live. The institution, maintained by <em><a href=\"https:\/\/comeduc.cl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fundaci\u00f3n Educacional Comeduc<\/a><\/em>, serves a population with higher levels of vulnerability and whose families work in the countryside. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/agro_detect\/\">Check out the initiative\u2019s profile on Instagram!<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a starting point for the teacher\u2019s methodology, the groups were encouraged to look at the school and its surroundings and the <a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/entry\/social-challenges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">social challenges<\/a> that affect the community in conversations with their families and neighbors. \u201cThis trio raised concerns about pesticides and fertilizers, a topic that is being discussed more and more in the region\u201d, explains the educator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the classroom proposal and encouraged by the foundation, teens who were interested could enroll in scientific opportunities and programs that would strengthen the project. By posing the issue, the group identified that <strong>Samsung Solve for Tomorrow<\/strong> could support them in thinking about a solution to the identified problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"explaining\">\n    <div class=\"explaining__text\">\n        <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working with the steps of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/connected-education\/design-thinking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Design Thinking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the trio advanced to qualify the problem, reaching the conclusion that the use of pesticides and fertilizers, as attested in the organizing document they wrote, \u201cis of great magnitude, which still does not have a defined solution and that directly affects the environment, the health of workers and people living close to agricultural sectors\u201d. Furthermore, data gathered by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/higieneambiental.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environmental Hygiene portal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> indicate that almost 60% of those who are directly exposed to pesticides require hospitalization and 2% are fatal cases.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>After understanding the problem, in the <a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/design-thinking-project-journey-solve-for-tomorrow\/#3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ideation<\/a> phase, the kids decided to create an alert tool, capable of indicating the level of toxicity in the air. \u201cIn the beginning, of course, they wanted to solve everything, but they realized that a simple solution, which they could actually collaborate with and be able to execute, could make a big difference,\u201d justifies Rogers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group\u2019s first <a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/entry\/prototype-stem-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prototype<\/a> consisted of an <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arduino\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Arduino<\/a> board, equipped with air quality parameter sensors, which detect, for example, the presence and quantity of carbon dioxide, methane and butane gasses, and trigger three message levels: good (or safe), medium (when patterns are outside normal), and alert (when patterns indicate toxicity). For the design of the model, they used the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tinkercad.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tinkercad<\/a> platform, and for the physical design, they made the hardware protection box in 3D printing, using <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Polylactic_acid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PLA<\/a> (polylactic acid) filament, a compound based on recycled materials and not harmful to the environment. For the tests, since they could not be exposed to toxic products, they did them using deodorants and aerosol cleaning products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"banner -yellow\">\n    <h5>\n                Eureka Moment!    <\/h5>\n    <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Rogers, it was when the first prototype was born that students really realized what they had created. \u201cIt is difficult to explain that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/entry\/social-innovation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">innovation <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">comes from simplicity. It is difficult to break with the idea that innovating is often in low complexity actions or mechanisms and that this will generate a concrete response\u201d, he explains. For the teacher, it was when the teens saw the prototype in operation that they realized that the solution they had proposed was, in fact, a kind of revolution in the sector.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>As they advanced in the program stages, mobilized by mentoring and in constant dialogue with other educators and members of the school community, the young people continued to investigate new ways to qualify the initial prototype. Among the challenges was ensuring a remote warning system, preventing agricultural workers from entering an unsafe area of the plantation after dumping pesticides. For this, they made a wi-fi and Bluetooth connection of the system with an application for smartphones, and then a robot cart, capable of transporting the sensor box, making it mobile. Finally, they adapted the solution for use in drones, capable of covering up to 2000 ha\u2082.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the technological resources, the group designed the logo and its entrepreneurial strategy, combining the various forms of offering the service as a proposal for continuous and low-cost assistance to farmers and rural workers. \u201cAs we move forward and win the award, we managed to form bridges that help students to take the idea off the drawing board and become something actually viable,\u201d celebrates the teacher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"explaining\">\n    <div class=\"explaining__text\">\n        <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Rogers, the real achievement was in the formation of the group and\u00a0 the growing involvement of the students with the work conducted: skills such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/entry\/communication-project-based-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">communication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (especially in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/design-thinking-project-journey-solve-for-tomorrow\/#5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pitch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> construction), collaboration between them and theirs with the school community and the surroundings, and especially \u201clearning by making mistakes\u201d, taking the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/entry\/scientific-literacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">empirical process<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as the guiding principle of learning.<\/span><\/p>\n    <\/div>\n    <aside class=\"explaining__box -blue -full\">\n        <h5>\n                        Learn more about Agro-detect        <\/h5>\n                <p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Access the <a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/INFORME-AGRODETECT.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> produced by the students, which details the distinct stages of the project and solution.<\/span><\/p>\n            <\/aside>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video aligncenter\"><video controls src=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/AGRODETECT-V-2.0.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video aligncenter\"><video controls src=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/AGRODETECT-DRON-V-3.0-GIRO.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video aligncenter\"><video controls src=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/AGRODETECT-V-3.0-FUNCIONAMIENTO.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video aligncenter\"><video controls src=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/PROTOTIPO-AGRO-DETECT-V-1.0.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Project-based learning: new ways of teaching and learning<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI understand that we need to turn&nbsp; school into a <a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/entry\/crowdlearning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">learning community<\/a>, where teachers and students collaborate by sharing experiences. It is necessary to change the paradigm from lectures to a <a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/connected-education\/project-based-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">project-based learning<\/a> model, which engages youth based on their interests and the needs of their territories,\u201d justifies Rogers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For <a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/entry\/project-evaluation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">evaluation<\/a>, the teacher worked with the group and other students of the discipline in the same way. He established rubrics and dialogically evaluated each stage of the projects, formalizing \u201cdeliverables\u201d, which were presented and\/or registered in Google Classroom. For example, for the definition phase, the teens had to present a diagram that defined the complexity of the problem; in the prototyping phase, they needed to show the initial prototype and the new designs elaborated from the tests. \u201cIn each phase, we worked with feedback, seeking that the assessment was in fact a way for them to learn and develop new skills and knowledge,\u201d adds the
