This problem affects millions of students and teachers who live in tropical regions of the world daily, even influencing how they learn and engage with their studies. And it was precisely this issue that mobilized three students and a teacher from <a href=\"http:\/\/carlosrestrepoaraujo.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Col\u00e9gio Carlos Restrepo Araujo<\/a>, located in Bosconia, Colombia, to think of simple and economical ways to refresh the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"explaining\">\n    <div class=\"explaining__text\">\n        <p>Observing how the thermal sensation was significantly lower under the trees, the group developed an accessible methodology and equipment for installing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Green_roof\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">green roofs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the institution\u2019s building. The chosen plants create a kind of insulating layer, reducing the incidence of heat, and refreshing the environment, just like the shade of a tree.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the beginning, naturally, outlandish ideas emerged, which were very costly or that generated secondary problems such as installing air conditioning, which, in addition to being financially unfeasible, generates direct environmental problems,\u201d analyzes teacher Hern\u00e1n Alvarado, who coordinated the team of students.<\/p>\n    <\/div>\n    <aside class=\"explaining__box -blue -full\">\n        <h5>\n                        Hot summers!        <\/h5>\n                <p>Located in the department of Cesar, in the North of the country, the region experiences summers with average temperatures of 38\u00baC and common peaks of over 40\u00baC. In addition to discomfort, high temperatures affect people\u2019s physical and emotional health and well-being.<\/p>\n            <\/aside>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>When the young people observed in practice the well-being generated by the shadows of the trees, they began to think about other possibilities for action. There, the group began intense research, seeking references on how to build, without large financial investments, the proposal for green roofs. \u201cBut then the problems arose. First, green roofs are common in Europe, where the technology is often applied out of environmental concerns and not necessarily as a strategy to lower temperatures. And secondly: the standard ceilings of schools in the region are sloping metal sheets. How would we go about planting the trees? How to ensure waterproofing? What is the maximum weight that the structure could have?\u201d narrates the teacher, highlighting the importance of the investigation process of the multiple issues that make up a challenge. He explains that more than 70% of the buildings in the region have roofs like the school\u2019s, which, although less expensive, increase the ambient temperature and the feeling of heat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Design Thinking at 40\u00baC: ideas to solve climate issues<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on <a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/connected-education\/design-thinking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Design Thinking<\/a>, the teacher worked with the class on each of the questions, and from the investigation and survey of ideas and possibilities, they began to <a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/entry\/prototype-stem-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prototype<\/a> the solution. As an initial response, they decided to place the plants in pots that could be fitted into structures and then transferred to the roofs. There were several designs until arriving at the solution for the nurseries, such as drawers that could be fitted onto rails, simulating building blocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The prototype was installed for testing at distances of 1m in height. From the tests, it was possible to verify that the technology developed by the young people lowers the ambient temperature by up to 8\u00baC, becoming a truly viable solution not only for schools but for homes and other buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, as temperatures in the region are very high, water evaporates very quickly, making it difficult to water. Thus, an improvement to the prototype was developed, adding to the structure a compartment for storing both irrigation and rainwater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To arrive at the final prototype, the group called on different specialists, in addition to intense research of references on scientific websites and materials specializing in the subject. The graphic design of the prototype was done with the support of the teacher himself, in the computer activities, while the biology teacher and the physics teacher supported with the choice of plants, ways of measuring temperatures, and definition of strategies to deal with the water evaporation. \u201cIt was a work that uniquely mobilized the students, and that involved different segments and people from the school\u201d, argues Hern\u00e1n. With the mentoring support of <strong>Samsung Solve for Tomorrow<\/strong>, the group was able to advance and understand the different stages of Design Thinking. \u201cThey supported us a lot in the <a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/design-thinking-project-journey-solve-for-tomorrow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">iterations<\/a>, understanding how we could actually improve the prototype and make our solution a replicable proposal\u201d, justifies the teacher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"banner -yellow\">\n    <h5>\n                Eureka Moment!    <\/h5>\n    <p>The teacher says that it was when they developed the idea of the rails that the solution came to life. The structure fits like a building block, but they did not know how to support the last piece. \u201cIt was then that we came up with the idea of creating holes in the base rails, fitting the pieces together individually. And at that moment, when we saw everything working, we realized that we had created something unique, which responded to our context, to our needs\u201d, celebrates the teacher.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>CoolRoof green roof: how it works<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The solution was named CoolRoof, in a play on words: Cool, in English, means both \u201cfresh\u201d and \u201cnice\u201d and Roof means \u201cceiling\u201d. Its final structure consists of two rails that connect two-level plastic rectangular structures. The lower level collects rainwater, and the second receives the plants. As it is a plug-in structure, it is possible to change the containers and plant pots individually, replacing or adjusting the patterns according to the need or configuration of the roofs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiative used a plant popularly known as <em>chorrito<\/em>, a vine that is typical of the region and has a good response as a thermal insulator. Because it is a vine, it grows quickly and occupies spaces more easily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"embed-responsive embed-responsive-16by9 ratio ratio-16x9\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"embed-responsive-item\"  title=\"Proyecto: Cool Roof. Team 91E\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Z3D0_HRuHOc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>CoolRoof: green roof as a continuity project<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The proposal, although only tested on an initial scale, caught the attention of local authorities. With the visibility of their participation in the <strong>Samsung Solve for Tomorrow<\/strong> program, young people were able to present the project to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bosconia-cesar.gov.co\/Paginas\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">City Hall<\/a>, which is interested in testing and replicating the proposal in schools and other public facilities in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The prototype was also presented to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sena.edu.co\/es-co\/Paginas\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Learning Service (SENA)<\/a>, a Colombian public institution for professional, technical, and entrepreneurial training linked to the country\u2019s Ministry of Labor, which showed great interest in supporting the group to continue testing and scaling the solution. The idea is to incubate the initiative in the region\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sena.edu.co\/es-co\/formacion\/Paginas\/tecnoparques.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tecnoparque<\/a>, qualifying both the prototype and the form of project management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Multiple wins: project-based learning<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the interest in the continuity of the project, which for the students and teacher is the greatest victory, the teacher celebrates working with the <a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/connected-education\/#hands-on\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">STEM approach<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/connected-education\/project-based-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Project Based Learning<\/a>. For him, the group\u2019s advances were visible, and the skills and knowledge developed will certainly impact their lives as students and as citizens and professionals in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Hern\u00e1n, although the students have advanced in many aspects, technical and <a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/connected-education\/soft-skills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">soft skills<\/a>; four skills must be highlighted. First, the teacher highlights the time management capacity of his students, who had to combine school activities with the demands of the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a second point, the teacher celebrates how the group qualified their ability for <a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/es\/entrada\/colaboracion-aprendizaje-basado-en-proyectos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">teamwork<\/a>, with each one defending their points of view and ideas but knowing how to listen and appreciate the collaboration of the colleague. Thirdly, Hern\u00e1n assesses that young people have lost their fear of making mistakes: \u201clearning to dream, to try, even if the initial response is not what was expected\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, the teacher explains that having contact with the external community, organizing the <a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/design-thinking-project-journey-solve-for-tomorrow\/#5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pitch<\/a>, and speaking in public in front of a panel of experts made all the difference. \u201cToday my students feel comfortable in environments they were not familiar with. They have security! And as a teacher this is the greatest gain I could wish for,\u201d he celebrates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"banner -blue\">\n    <h5>\n                Engagement!    <\/h5>\n    <p>The proposal arose from a call from the teacher in his regular technology and computer classes for the 9<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-grade classes. After publicizing the program at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mineducacion.gov.co\/portal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ministry of Education<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the teacher presented the proposal as practical work on his subject for anyone interested. Five groups participated in <\/span><b>Samsung Solve For Tomorrow<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and two teams reached the final
