{"id":6279,"date":"2023-03-22T13:53:05","date_gmt":"2023-03-22T16:53:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/pratica\/estudantes-peruanos-geram-energia-eletrica-a-partir-de-trapiche-de-cana\/"},"modified":"2026-03-26T18:22:29","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T21:22:29","slug":"estudantes-peruanos-geram-energia-eletrica-a-partir-de-trapiche-de-cana","status":"publish","type":"pratica","link":"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/case\/estudantes-peruanos-geram-energia-eletrica-a-partir-de-trapiche-de-cana\/","title":{"rendered":"Peruvian students generate electricity from sugarcane mills"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The absence and constant outages of electricity are realities present in many rural communities in Latin America, making it impossible for a large group of families to have access to basic equipment such as lamps, refrigerators, televisions and electronic devices that can contribute to the study, learning, sociability, and leisure of young people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was with this issue in mind that students in the 4th year of Secondary Education, from the Educational Institution \u201cEl Com\u00fan\u201d, in Fr\u00edas, in the department of Piura, in Peru, developed the project <em>Trapiche que da luz <\/em>(<em>Trapiche<\/em> that gives light\u201d). Located more than a thousand kilometers from the capital, Lima, the school serves a population that is mostly from the countryside and does not have access to many basic rights, such as electricity. \u201cThis is the case of one of the students in the group, by the way. Mariela, who collaborates with the family on the household chores, is unable to carry out study activities that require electronic equipment, and even for cooking, she must use a flashlight to light up the environment\u201d, emphasizes Yuly Rivera, a science teacher who accompanied the trio of students <strong>Samsung Solve for Tomorrow<\/strong> winners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video alignfull\"><video controls src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=1837948413234985\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"banner -yellow\">\n    <h5>\n                Electrical energy    <\/h5>\n    <p>Data from the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) indicate that more than 30 million people do not have access to electricity in the region and that there is great inequality in coverage between urban and rural environments. According to the database of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hubenergia.org\/es\/indicators\/acceso-al-servicio-de-electricidad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inter-American Development Bank (IDB)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in 2022 Peru had the second worst index in the region, with 20% of homes in rural areas without access to this se<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rvice<\/span>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Real problems-solving: electricity from sugarcane<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Motivated by the teacher, the trio developed a device that converts kinetic energy from the <em>trapiche<\/em>s used by the families in the countryside into electrical energy. \u201cThe idea was to develop a non-polluting and accessible mechanism that, if improved, could be implemented as a concrete solution to this demand,\u201d explains Yuli.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"570\" src=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screenshot-2023-03-22-at-11.56.18-1024x570.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screenshot-2023-03-22-at-11.56.18-1024x570.png 1024w, https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screenshot-2023-03-22-at-11.56.18-300x167.png 300w, https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screenshot-2023-03-22-at-11.56.18-768x428.png 768w, https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screenshot-2023-03-22-at-11.56.18.png 1278w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Structure of the prototype developed by the students<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trapiche\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">trapiches<\/a><\/em>, commonly driven by domestic horses, are a present tool and are still widely used by families in the region for grinding sugar cane. As a proposal, the young people developed a <a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/entry\/prototype-stem-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prototype<\/a> from parts of an unused printer. \u201cThe students took the printer\u2019s motor, as well as the belt and pulley, and put them together in a system that simulated a small <em>trapiche<\/em>. The kinetic energy generated by rotating the parts was converted into electrical energy. And we managed to make this prototype at no cost, using what we already had available\u201d, details the professor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"549\" src=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screenshot-2023-03-22-at-11.58.03-1024x549.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6222\" srcset=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screenshot-2023-03-22-at-11.58.03-1024x549.png 1024w, https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screenshot-2023-03-22-at-11.58.03-300x161.png 300w, https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screenshot-2023-03-22-at-11.58.03-768x412.png 768w, https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screenshot-2023-03-22-at-11.58.03.png 1204w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">First working prototype, lighting LED lamp.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on the first tests, and with the support of the mentor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/luis-ernesto-flores-olazo-lefo-40036635\/?originalSubdomain=pe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Luiz Ernesto Flores \u201cLefo\u201d<\/a>, a researcher at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, the youths set out to install the prototype in a real <em>trapiche<\/em>. However, the first tests did not work because the horse&#8217;s speed was low. \u201cIt was a tremendous disappointment, but Lefo motivated us to move forward, seeking to correct the problem. Investigating, we discovered that our engine was not powerful enough, \u201cshe justifies. Every year, in all her classes, students are invited to form small groups and propose real solutions to <a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/entry\/social-challenges\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">local problems or challenges<\/a>. Using <a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/connected-education\/project-based-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Project Based Learning<\/a>, Yuli encourages groups to observe and understand the phenomenon they wish to investigate, formulate hypotheses, experiment, and accept or reject hypotheses initially formulated, evaluating them at each stage and together with the technical and soft skills developed throughout the process. \u201cAs an educator, I am much more interested in them noticing their evolution than the score,\u201d she points out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yuli further explains that she decided to change her approach to the&nbsp; classes when years ago, one student in a physics lesson asked her the question \u201cProfessor, what am I going to use this for in my life?\u201d and without reaction, she did not know how to respond. \u201cI too, in the automatic process of following the content manual for themselves, had already lost sight of what they are for and why they are important. I understood then that I needed to rethink the structure of my activities,\u201d she justifies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the <a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/connected-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">STEM approach<\/a> and conducting projects in their activities, students spend the semester investigating and discussing problems in their communities, turning academic knowledge into concrete experiences that respond to the context in which they live. \u201cI don\u2019t necessarily want them to come up with solutions or that they work out, but that they have <a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/entry\/scientific-literacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">scientific research<\/a> as a learning guide,\u201d she class=\"visually-hidden\">Pr\u00f3ximo<\/span>\n\t<\/button>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Associating her regular dynamics with the <strong>Samsung Solve for Tomorrow<\/strong> proposal, the teacher also brought the didactic and experiential resources of <a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/connected-education\/design-thinking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Design Thinking<\/a> to support them. \u201cThe <a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/design-thinking-project-journey-solve-for-tomorrow\/#3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ideation<\/a> and prototyping processes were fundamental for them to see their idea happening,\u201d she celebrates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"banner -blue\">\n    <h5>\n                Eureka Moment!    <\/h5>\n    <p>It was precisely through trial and error that the young people found the solution to adjust the 2nd prototype, implemented in the real <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trapiche<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For the teacher, students must accept mistakes as part of the process and learn from them. In the case of the pier, changing the pulleys was the key turning point in making the idea come true.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong><strong>Achievements for the present and life: teamwork<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Yuli explains that in addition to scientific knowledge, in STEM projects, youngsters develop fundamental skills for life in society, such as co-responsibility, teamwork, <a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/entry\/communication-project-based-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">communication<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/entry\/collaboration-project-based-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">collaboration<\/a>. Among the various skills, Yuli highlights the evolution of students in being able to communicate their ideas safely, translating them in an accessible way to different audiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd it is also in this way that the school becomes more attractive, motivating them to move forward, to continue their studies, encouraging them to keep studying,\u201d she adds, arguing that in the countryside scenario, evasion is a permanent problem. \u201cWe need the school to talk about reality, their lives, everyday life,\u201d she
