With <a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/connected-education\/project-based-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">project based learning<\/a>, teaching and learning becomes a pleasurable act and it is what mobilizes all my activities as a teacher.\u201d It was with this premise that professor F\u00e1bio Cano Carnielo, in 2017, started \u201cPatrol 7 \u2013 Producing science\u201d, an elective project course that brings together students interested in experiencing research, teaching, and extension initiatives in biology in practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Daily, during the lunch break of kids who study at the Full Time Education Center (CETI) Prof. Manuel Vicente Ferreira Lima, in Coari, in the interior of Amazonas, more than 60 young people gather in the school\u2019s laboratory and courtyard to develop science projects. \u201cThroughout the year, they learn to implement the scientific method based on questions related to their interests. As a result, they develop <a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/entry\/prototype-stem-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">prototype<\/a> solutions for <a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/connected-education\/real-problem-solving\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">problems of interest of the community<\/a>, publish scientific papers, and become monitors of the school\u2019s regular science activities\u201d, summarizes F\u00e1bio, emphasizing the <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/chapter\/10.1007\/978-3-030-43601-8_4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">teaching-research-extension<\/a> tripod that mobilizes all Patrol 7s actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"banner -yellow\">\n    <h5>\n                Creando alas para volar alto    <\/h5>\n    <p>Desde que comenz\u00f3 la electiva, los estudiantes participantes han logrado numerosos logros. Hubo varios trabajos publicados en revistas con Qualis A y B (identificador de calidad de la producci\u00f3n cient\u00edfica), incluyendo revistas de bioqu\u00edmica, biolog\u00eda y biotecnolog\u00eda de la Universidad Federal de S\u00e3o Paulo y la <a href=\"https:\/\/ufam.edu.br\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Universidad Federal de Amazonas<\/a> y muchos reconocimientos en ferias y concursos de ciencia, como <a href=\"https:\/\/febrace.org.br\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FEBRACE<\/a> y <a href=\"https:\/\/stembrasil.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">STEM Brasil<\/a>. \u201cEstoy preocupado por su curr\u00edculum. La idea es que ellos desarrollen alas y planeen sus propios vuelos\u201d, celebra el docente, al se\u00f1alar que muchos de los egresados \u200b\u200bdel grupo fueron aprobados y cursan estudios superiores.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>It was in this context that a group of four teenagers from the 1st year of high school participating in the initiative decided to get involved with an old teacher issue. \u201cI brought them a personal experience. Years ago, when I was teaching classes at a school in the riverside community, a colleague and I were infected with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Typhoid_fever\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">typhoid fever<\/a>, consuming unsafe water at school\u201d, recalls F\u00e1bio. Mobilized by the problem, which affects more remote communities and large urban centers that still lack adequate sanitation, the young people decided to recover a prototype worked on in previous years and which had not produced the expected results, developing a portable water treatment microstation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As they began to better research the problem, the students were able to understand the issues present in previous versions of the prototype that had been developed by other groups. \u201cThey began to understand how and what they could contribute. The question of how to make the proposal work organized the line of research and the steps to be followed,\u201d emphasizes the professor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In general terms, the group produced a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Water_treatment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">water treatment plant<\/a> employing materials available in the community. Using 20L gallons of water and pots of margarine, they created a three-step system:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the first, which works as a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Decantation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">decanter<\/a>, a flocculating coagulator is added to the incoming water, causing heavy flakes, such as clay, to be separated.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The water then passes through a filter with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Activated_carbon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">activated carbon<\/a> made from banana peels arranged in coarse and fine pebbles and coarse sand, eliminating heavy metals and protozoa.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Finally, in the third stage, the water remains in a reservoir where one drop of chlorine per liter is added. The entire process is controlled by registers operated by the user according to the supply needs.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>To attest the quality of the water, the youths performed several laboratory tests, measuring for example, Ph, the presence of microorganisms, electrolytes, and heavy metals. \u201cAt all times, in all projects, I try to get young people to focus on the <a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/entry\/scientific-literacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">scientific method<\/a>, assessing their hypotheses, confirming and systematizing the results\u201d, reports F\u00e1bio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IlvocjuRU64&#038;ab_channel=SolveForTomorrowBrasil\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the group\u2019s concerns was the size and weight of the prototype. \u201cFrom the beginning, they wanted to do something that could be implemented in the communities, focusing on the extension pillar of Patrol 7\u201d, says the professor. Therefore, they chose materials that were low-cost, easily accessible, and light to transport. As a result, they were able to assemble the structure for less than R$30, meaning under six US dollars. \u201cProducing in scale, we would still be able to lower the equipment cost, \u201c he adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<div id=\"sp_carousel_block_64231859b1558\" class=\"carousel slide\" data-bs-ride=\"carousel\">\n    <div class=\"carousel-inner\">\n                <div class=\"carousel-item data-bs-slide=\"next\">\n\t\t<span class=\"carousel-control-next-icon\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/span>\n\t\t<span class=\"visually-hidden\">Pr\u00f3ximo<\/span>\n\t<\/button>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Still, on the matter of portability, the positioning of the drums was another challenge. In the first versions, they worked with a horizontal structure, which took up a lot of space. \u201cBased on the group\u2019s conversations, one of our students systematized our discussions into a graphic design, and the school\u2019s science coordinator supported us, cutting the wood to arrive at the desired structure\u201d, points out F\u00e1bio, highlighting the importance of <a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/entry\/collaboration-project-based-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">collaborative work<\/a> throughout the process. \u201cThe initiative mobilized the school as a whole, which is another very positive consequence of the project approach\u201d, he indicates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"banner -blue\">\n    <h5>\n                Eureka Moment!    <\/h5>\n    <p>The group had already moved forward with the microstation, discussing the scientific results achieved, including scientific publications, but portability was still an issue. \u201cWhen one of our group members brought the idea of margarine pots to lower costs and when we started to review the layout of the steps for a vertical structure, we realized that we would be able to take our idea into the daily life of our communities,\u201d celebrates the teacher.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">New stages and lots of learning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"explaining\">\n    <div class=\"explaining__text\">\n        <p>The idea was so successful that now the group has a double challenge: to incubate the proposal to serve the population and making a new version, with greater capacity, to install in public facilities, such as schools. \u201cWe have this concrete need today in our institution and now we want to advance in the design to serve a large number of people daily\u201d, adds the professor.<\/p>\n<p>For the educator, this is a great achievement of the <a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/connected-education\/#hands-on\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">STEM approach<\/a>: making academic knowledge tangible in the reality and daily life of students. \u201cIn the science book, we study ecosystems based on models and representations, but we can go to the garden, the soccer field, the flowerbed on the side of the square and observe all of nature at work: the ants, the plants, the drops of dew, the sun. And this observation and active investigation mobilize and build learning. Knowledge becomes a practical experience and vice versa,\u201d explains the professor.<\/p>\n    <\/div>\n    <aside class=\"explaining__box -yellow -full\">\n        <h5>\n                        Present skills        <\/h5>\n                <p>F\u00e1bio also celebrates the development of <a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/connected-education\/soft-skills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">soft skills<\/a>, highlighting the importance of learning to work as a team, listening attentively and being available to other people\u2019s ideas, and effective and engaging <a href=\"https:\/\/solvefortomorrowlatam.com\/en\/entry\/communication-project-based-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">communication<\/a>. \u201cOur <strong>Solve for Tomorrow<\/strong> mentor [Kacy] was instrumental. She brought concrete tools to the group to develop the ability to speak in public and adequately summarize the message; fundamental teachings in which I did not know how to support them, \u201csays F\u00e1bio.<\/p>\n            <\/aside>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Project work, however, demands time from the teacher with the students. For F\u00e1bio, it is necessary to advance public policies that allow the educator the conditions to structure active methodologies in the classroom, extrapolating the limits of 50 minutes of activities and textbooks. \u201cIt takes time to plan, but mainly for the professor to be with his students,\u201d he evaluates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For him, however, it is necessary to fight for the possibilities of ideal teaching, but not to remain immobile due to the lack of adequate conditions. \u201cI understand that you must dream and create real goals based on that dream. Wow! We are from a small town in the interior of the Amazonas and we are among the ten largest projects in Brazil, even without the best physical and financial structures. We have our students committed and engaged with a collective dream, and we show that it is possible to turn it into reality,\u201d he concludes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A
